about

The Marae Sessions were inspired by the Band in a Bubble project that first ran in Melbourne in 2004—what would happen if a group of leading musicians were put in a single space together and told to simply write songs?

In August 2017, staff in the Music Department at the Waikato Institute of Technology were joined by vocalist Brooke Baker, drummer Reuben Bradley, and guitarist John Egenes at Te Kōpū Mania o Kirikiriroa Marae in Hamilton to do just this over a week. After much improvising, tweaking of words, recording band takes, and the occasional glass of chardonnay, the Band in the Bubble produced the five songs that comprise the Marae Sessions.
